Aquatic Nuisance: Water Chestnut

We need your help in addressing an urgent environmental issue affecting our lake. The invasive water chestnut (Trapa natans) has been spotted in the area from Newton-Swartswood bridge downstream to the water skiing turn around buoy and then downstream by the "S" turn. Around 100 plants have been identified, some at surface some below water surface.

This aggressive plant poses a significant threat to our aquatic ecosystem by forming dense mats on the water's surface, which can lead to decreased oxygen levels, hindered boat navigation, and negatively impacted native species.

We are in communication with the NJ DEP regarding the issue and the best path forward for treatment.

Action Required: While boating in the identified area, please keep a vigilant eye out for water chestnut. This plant is characterized by its rosette of floating leaves with sharply serrated edges and a spongy, inflated petiole. The fruit is a distinctive, horned nut.

Steps to Help:

1. Identify: Look for the distinctive features of the water chestnut.

2. Remove: If you encounter this plant, carefully pull it out by the roots. It’s crucial to remove the entire plant to prevent regrowth.

3. Dispose: Destroy the plants by disposing of them on land where they cannot re-enter the water.

Please email us at corsec.paulinskil@gmail.com should you find any of this invasive weed and unable to remove it. You can also visit the PLA website for more information.

Your assistance in this matter is invaluable. By working together, we can protect our waters and preserve the natural beauty and health of our ecosystem.

Boater Update – Mandatory Winter PFD Wear

New Regulation 13:82-1.4(f)

NJDEP| Fish & Wildlife | Boater Update - Mandatory Winter PFD Wear

Boater Update – Mandatory Winter PFD Wear - New Regulation 13:82-1.4(f) Starting this November, no owner or operator of a recreational vessel less than 26 feet, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards shall permit its operation between November 1st and May 1st, unless each person on board such vessel is wearing a securely fastened United States Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device of an appropriate size while such vessel is underway. A person inside the cabin of a cabin vessel shall be exempt from this requirement. In short, A USCG approved life jacket is required to be worn at all times, outside of a cabin on a boat under 26 feet during the cold-water months, while in motion, from November 1st to May 1st.

The goal of this legislative update is to prevent hypothermia deaths, and to decrease the risks placed upon first responders during winter search and rescue operations on the waters of New Jersey. In almost every instance of a vessel related drowning, the victim was not wearing a life vest.

REMINDER

We need to ensure the integrity of the Earthen Dam (Grass Area next to the Dam). This area is not to be used for launching Kayaks or Canoes.

Members - This is a reminder that per the Bylaws: Dogs are not permitted at any time on the beaches, playgrounds or ballfields. This is for health and wellbeing of all members still using the beaches. Thank you for your understanding.

NEW PROCESS: Beach Badge Ordering

We have changed the process for ordering Beach Badges! If you would like beach badges, you can order them on our website, under the BADGE REQUEST FORM tab.

In the past, every PLA member automatically received them, but not everyone wanted or used them. To save on overordering/printing, this year & moving forward, badges must be ordered on our website, exactly how boat stickers are ordered. AS REQUESTED.

The Badges are now the size of a credit card, with our beautiful lake on the front and member information on the back. Each year, when you request a renewal of your badges, you will be mailed an updated sticker to place on the back of the card. This method will save on printing, postage and waste! : )

 BEACH 1 & 2:

The following is the procedure for the opening the beaches when the weather is inclement:

In the rain and during storms, lifeguards will not be on duty, however, will be on call. Using our discretion, lifeguards will open beaches once the rain and/or storms have subsided.
