FREE TREE PROGRAM

To combat the tree mortality caused by the emerald ash borer (invasive insect), the SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group secured grant funding to
purchase native saplings for distribution throughout the Paulins Kill Watershed Lake Communities. The infestation of the emerald ash borer is killing ash trees throughout NJ which is leading to a dramatic increase in stormwater runoff into the Paulins Kill Lakes. Trees act like sponges, helping to soak up stormwater runoff that would otherwise flow into the lake. By helping to replace the tree canopy that was lost because of ash tree mortality lake residents will be helping to protect the health off their lake.

To participate in the SCMUA-Watershed Management Group’s tree program, participants need to be residents of:

Culver Lake
Lake Owassa
Crandon Lakes
Kemah Lake
Swartswood Lakes
Paulinskill Lake

Each household can request up to 5 native trees to plant on their property. Your trees will be delivered mid-May and will be provided to you at no cost to you thanks to grant funding provided by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The SCMUA-Wallkill River Watershed Management Group staff will also be able to help you plant your trees upon request.

Boater Update – Mandatory Winter PFD Wear

New Regulation 13:82-1.4(f)

NJDEP| Fish & Wildlife | Boater Update - Mandatory Winter PFD Wear

Boater Update – Mandatory Winter PFD Wear - New Regulation 13:82-1.4(f) Starting this November, no owner or operator of a recreational vessel less than 26 feet, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards shall permit its operation between November 1st and May 1st, unless each person on board such vessel is wearing a securely fastened United States Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device of an appropriate size while such vessel is underway. A person inside the cabin of a cabin vessel shall be exempt from this requirement. In short, A USCG approved life jacket is required to be worn at all times, outside of a cabin on a boat under 26 feet during the cold-water months, while in motion, from November 1st to May 1st.

The goal of this legislative update is to prevent hypothermia deaths, and to decrease the risks placed upon first responders during winter search and rescue operations on the waters of New Jersey. In almost every instance of a vessel related drowning, the victim was not wearing a life vest.

NEW PROCESS: Beach Badge Ordering

We have changed the process for ordering Beach Badges! If you would like beach badges, you can order them on our website, under the BADGE REQUEST FORM tab.

In the past, every PLA member automatically received them, but not everyone wanted or used them. To save on overordering/printing, this year & moving forward, badges must be ordered on our website, exactly how boat stickers are ordered. AS REQUESTED.

The Badges are now the size of a credit card, with our beautiful lake on the front and member information on the back. Each year, when you request a renewal of your badges, you will be mailed an updated sticker to place on the back of the card. This method will save on printing, postage and waste! : )

 BEACH 1 & 2:

The following is the procedure for the opening the beaches when the weather is inclement:

In the rain and during storms, lifeguards will not be on duty, however, will be on call. Using our discretion, lifeguards will open beaches once the rain and/or storms have subsided.
